About BKC

Bandra-Kurla Complex: Growth Potential Infinite!

History / Background

The large stretch of marshy land that lay to the north of the Mahim creek was strategically placed between the central suburb of Kurla to its east and the queen of western suburbs, Bandra to its west. Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority or MMRDA, was entrusted with the job of developing this 370 hectares of low-lying land into a bustling commercial zone that would help reduce the congestion of South Mumbai. Thus was born a success story called Bandra-Kurla Complex or BKC.

Location

Bandra-Kurla Complex or BKC as it is known as, has many notable advantages as far as proximity to numerous travel choices are concerned. BKC is located between Bandra Railway station on the western line and Kurla station on the central line which makes commuting to and from this place a breeze.

Both these stations have railway terminals too, giving this area an extra edge. Add to this the accessibility to the Western Express Highway on one side and the Eastern Express Highway on the other, and BKC is a sure-fire winner on the location front.

International travellers visiting the large number of Government and private offices located here find it amazingly convenient as the Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport is a short drive away (Traffic may seem unending at times, but that’s Mumbai for you). The upcoming Mumbai Metro- Line II has been designed to pass through the BKC and will certainly add a new dimension to local travel for the 600,000 plus people working in the offices located here.

The Bandra Kurla Complex

Is a business and residential district in the city of Mumbai, India. It is a prominent upscale commercial hub which commands some of the highest property rates in the country.

Bandra-Kurla-Complex

Traditionally, Government and private offices were concentrated around Fort, Nariman Point and Colaba and this new alternative, called Bandra-Kurla Complex, gave a whole new dimension to the decongestion of South Mumbai. Today, huge institutions have their offices in this well-laid out commercial zone and include behemoths like Bank of Baroda, State Bank of India, Bank of India, Citigroup, ICICI Bank, Dena Bank, Punjab National Bank, the Reserve Bank of India to name a few from the banking sector.

Bandra-Kurla Complex houses many large corporate houses like IBM, Google, Equinox Realty, National Stock Exchange, Amazon, Spotify, Indian Oil, JP Morgan Chase, SAP India while a large number of private offices have set up shop here too. Many International schools and Consulate offices have made BKC their home.

BKC is not only about High rise Buildings, Swanky offices, wide roads and well-laid out blocks, it is also home to hotels like The Sofitel, Trident & Kohinoor Elite and proves to be a great host to its travelling guests.

The hungry crowd is pretty well fed too with options right from some mouth-watering street food to global menus available to satisfy their hunger pangs throughout the day and late nights too. Places like Yauatcha, Butterfly High, Toast & Tonic, Capital Social, Hello Guppy are a few options that are worth exploring.

Similarly, one can spend quality time with business colleagues or friends at the numerous coffee shops lined up in this planned business district. Cafes Like Blue Tokai Coffee, Pondichery Cafe, Good Co. Coffee, and Theobroma are the more prominent ones here and conveniently located too. If you are in the mood for a quick snack, the centrally located Food court near the Income Tax offices is a great option too.

Open plots collectively known as ‘MMRDA Grounds’ are available on rent, and have become automatic choices for hosting most of the city’s Trade Exhibitions, Music Concerts, Award Nights and Religious and Political Rallies. The MMRDA grounds have witnessed many international pop stars like Akon, 50 Cent, Beyonce, Guns N’ Roses, Pitbull, Bryan Adams and Shakira.

BKC hosted Vodafone Speed Fest, an F1 Street Race featuring Lewis Hamilton on 16 September 2012.

The Global Citizen Festival was hosted at the MMRDA Grounds on 19 November 2016, headlined by Coldplay and Demi Lovato.

For the fitness conscious, the local authorities have provided around 30 kms of cycling tracks around the entire complex, though all may not be entirely usable currently. There is also a huge City Park here which gives the much-needed oxygen-break for families, office employees and not-to-miss privacy hungry couples too and find favour with children, especially during weekends.

Bandra-Kurla Complex, due to its abundance in space, boasts of some excellent parking facilities (paid, of course!) for the large number of employees and visitors. Taxi & Auto stands have been clearly ear-marked and the local BEST bus services have a wonderful frequency, especially from Bandra East Railway station and Kurla Railway station.  For people who work here and for business visitors, BKC is a boon, given the travel options, connectivity and amenities provided.

Since only a small percentage of the available 379 hectares of land has been developed, there is a huge potential in store for those who choose to invest here. Large open spaces, utility complexes, underground parking are being envisaged for the future and spells out a great future for BKC.

BKC is in close proximity to some pretty large slums pockets which double up as small-scale industries too and may prove to be an eyesore in some cases. But that is how Mumbai has always been, an amalgamation of many such contrasts, which possibly adds to the charm of living and working in this Mega city. Come, experience a 360° life and more!
